Sam Pelly Presents Alina’s Lament A new body of photographic works

This show is a series of images taken over the course of 5 years. The work reflects still moments that echo a depth the artist feels and longs for within himself. Seen together they tell the story of a roaming quest; an endless search for identity. Out of the many thousands of photographs taken, these are the ones the artist would keep returning to.

Pelly has found another dimension, and invites the observer to venture in. The images have a dream like resonance that leaves the audience questioning. There is a quietness to the work, a meditation: each picture offering a solitary moment of rest, with the knowledge of something greater.

Driven by a claustrophobic necessity to escape the noise and details of red-taped, routined existence, Pelly’s solitary trips are serendipitous affairs that allow for a string of coincidences. It is from these very experiences that Pelly has found something he was searching for; something which defines the very mystery of his subject matter.

Shot with an old rolleicord, a camera whose identity in the modern age of capture capability, seems romantic, nostalgic and perhaps even archaic, but with which gives Pelly’s work a muted painterly quality. This only adds and enhances the depths of his subject matter. When seen side by side the colors and subjects fuse, creating a show of harmony and accord.
